7 ways you can use this downtime to accelerate your personal brand

on

Although it may not always feel like it, there are rays of hope when tough times hit. Yes, it might be a challenge to find them sometimes, but even in the hardest of times, there are things that we can all be grateful for. For business owners in the age of The COVID-19 crisis, many of us have found ourselves at home full time. Either trying to work from home if you’ve got the ability with your job or trying to work out what your next move is.

Something that everyone can do, right now, is to use this downtime to grow their personal brand – be it for your career or for your business. The competition is only going to get more fierce when we ‘come out’ of this crisis, so invest some time right now to build your personal brand online, so you can thrive when the tide turns. Here are five simple things you can do to start (or accelerate) your personal brand

1. Start with the end in mind

First things first, you need to decide why it’s important for you to do this. If it’s about future-proofing your career, so that when the time comes for promotions, you’re the first one they think about. It could be about establishing your own personal brand as a stand-alone entity. This will help you to establish yourself and your name online.

2. Who are you doing it for?

Most people want to build a personal brand for a specific reason. From wanting to get more clients to establishing themselves as a thought leader within an organisation. You need to decide who you want to see you online, so you can reverse engineer your personal brand strategy.

When you know who they are, you can start to create content that helps you establishing your positioning with that audience.

For instance, in business you’ll consider who your niche is. You want to grow your personal brand and your online visibility to be seen by this niche, so that they may become a client of yours in the future.

3. Start creating online content

Content online is anything from the posts you put up to the images you share. Yet, if you’re wanting to create a personal brand that will help you in the future, you need to be creating strategic content. Let’s take a look at some options.

4. Start blogging

Blogging online is a type of writing (or video) where you share your thoughts, your advice and your expertise for free with your desired audience. Follow a simple structure for your blogs, such as this: Identify a problem or a challenge your audience have. Think of a story that you can share about a time where you found yourself in a similar situation (or you had a client in a similar situation). Share 1-5 steps that your audience could undertake to help them navigate the challenge/problem you identified. Let them know that they can reach out to you for help in need.

You’ll then share your blogs on social media.

5. Create a podcast

Podcasts are great for those of you who prefer speaking advice rather than writing. Brainstorm a list of 12 challenges that your audience have and there’s 12 months’ worth of podcast topics!

You can create your podcast for free or very little outlay using programs such as audacity. Once the blog is uploaded, you can then share it online.

6. Write a book

Nothing establishes your personal brand and therefore your positioning in the marketplace like a book does. Start with thinking about the audience that you’re writing the book for. What are their problems and challenges, their goals, dreams and desires?

Consider what advice you can give them throughout your book that will help them move from being in the place that they’re in now to where they want to be. You can even take excerpts out your book while you’re writing and share these online.

7. Be consistent

Consistency builds familiarity. When you’re building your personal brand online, it’s important that people see consistency in your brand, and they see this in the content you share. Be consistent in your messaging. Be consistent with your content. Be consistent when it comes to posting regularly online.

Use the time that you have right now to establish your personal brand, that will support you through all your future endeavours.
