How to create career clarity at a crossroad

Ever wondered why you might be in a good or even perfect job but you feel bored, unchallenged and unfulfilled? And if you’re at that kind of crossroad, how do you find the career clarity to make a decision

First of all, consider all the signs you might be at a crossroad. Not sure what you should do but you know that what you are doing is not right for you? Do you ask yourself questions like, should you change jobs or make your current job work? If you are experiencing this, you need to get career clarity before you do anything.

For me career clarity means being crystal clear on what you want and why you want it.  The thing is, if you don’t get clear on what you want and why you want it, you are guaranteed to end up in a similar company doing a similar job having exactly the same feelings and frustrations.

You will also feel overwhelmed and anxious every time you need to make a career decision because you have no idea which direction is going to bring you closer or further away from your goal.  So that’s why it is so important. Now, let’s look how you can get career clarity.

 

Career clarity about what you want

First you need to figure out what you want. I mean what you really want. Not just a job title, I’m talking about the list of skills you want to use on a daily basis. The responsibilities you want to have. The growth opportunities or flexibility you are after.  The company culture you fit best.

If you don’t know in detail what you really want you are very unlikely to find it.  Even if it’s right in front of you.

Career clarity about why you want it

The second element you need to figure out is your why. If you don’t know why you are doing what you do, you are going to get distracted and you will doubt every choice you make. Without really understanding your ‘why’, you are unlikely to feel satisfied, happy, challenged and fulfilled in your job. Have you ever felt you are doing something and you don’t really know why you are doing it in the first place?

The reason you feel this way is because your why isn’t met. You don’t care enough about what you are doing. When you care, you will feel challenged and achieve success and have fulfillment. So, what is the why behind what you want?

Here are some questions to ask yourself to get you started:

  • How will this role contribute to your big career goal?
  • Where do you want to be in your career when you are 60?
  • How will reaching these goals impact your life: financially, physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually?
  • Why do you want these results?
  • What are your reasons?
  • What are the ‘why’s’ to back up your ‘what’s’?

Don’t worry about answering perfectly and don’t let yourself off the hook with “I don’t know.” Your aim here is to start your thinking process; it’s ok if you don’t know all the answers straight away.

Most importantly is to write down as many real reasons as you can and to really connect emotionally to what you want by being crystal clear on why you want it.
