6 easy ways to stay up-to-date with the job market

If you’re looking to get back in the game after an absence, such as maternity or taking time off for your family, or if you’re simply looking for a big break that will help you further your career, it’s crucial that you keep a close eye on the job market. Things move fast, and if you look away for too long, you may miss the opportunity you’ve always dreamed of.

1. Read industry blogs

Find any and all blogs relevant to your industry. Blogs that discuss current trends, innovations, or even blogs that strictly revolve around job growth can help you get a better understanding of what you can expect. There’s more than just blogs – you can also sign up for email lists or subscribe to print materials, such as quarterly newsletters or print magazines. If you’re confident in your industry knowledge, you can always start your own blog and exchange guest posts with other bloggers. It’s a great way to network and keep information fresh in your mind.

2. Attend conventions, conferences, and expos

Online networking is great, but you may not be able to see everything all at once. You could be missing information you never knew was there. If you can, attend in-person networking events. They’ll give you a chance to make some great first impression, or meet people you may otherwise never have met. Many of these events also have speakers who will present data about the job market and how it impacts specific work niches. There are several sites that list information about networking events by location.

3. See who’s hiring for what positions

One of the easiest ways to see what’s open is checking job boards. People don’t post wanted ads unless they’re actually hiring. Try to check sites like Gumtree once a week, just to see what’s open. Read the required qualifications in job descriptions posted by relevant employers, and see if there’s anything you can do to make yourself a more valuable candidate. The job market is constantly changing, and often times, employers will raise their standards.

4. Maintain an active social media presence

Social media networking is easy, especially since you never have to leave your house. One of the best ways to make valuable connections, or even be discovered by employers looking to hire privately, is by maintaining your presence on social networks. Employers love using LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook to locate eligible candidates. Just make sure you have separate personal and professional profiles – a potential employer probably doesn’t want to see the photos of you enjoying margaritas in Cancun during spring break.

5. Join online communities

A great number of private forums, message boards, and social networking groups exist specifically for certain industries. Some of them are even tailored exclusively to women, making them even more welcoming. Find a few communities, observe the interactions for a few weeks, and slowly introduce yourself. A lot of communities aren’t friendly to people who join for the mere purpose of shameless self- promotion. Using these communities to foster professional friendships can really lead you places, and other members may post about unadvertised openings within their companies.

6. Keep your resume and profiles updated for a quick response

If you aren’t currently employed or you’re looking to switch industries, don’t forget to update your profiles to include this information. It may be time to refresh and tailor your resume to be viewed by new eyes. A new opportunity requires a new start – sometimes from the ground up.
