There’s an Aretha song for every situation in life. And business.

Before Beyonce we had Aretha. This was the woman who sang the songs we could believe in. The woman who took the word RESPECT and spelled it out to all the men and women across the world.

A powerful voice with such a powerful message that TO THIS DAY we ladies sing it at karaoke, blast it out in our cars and use it as a means to build up the level of confidence we need to take on the world.

Before Independent Women by Destiny’s Child, we had Sisters are Doing it For Themselves.

When struggling with the ‘boys club’ in business — or generally feeling like you are treated like less of a human — all I need is to remind myself that ….

Sisters are doin’ it for themselves

Standin’ on their own two feet

And ringin’ on their own bells

Said, sisters are doin’ it for themselves

Women who struggle to stand up for themselves may find great motivation by playing Think … powerful words hidden behind a great tune

“People walking around everyday

Playing games, taking score

Trying to make other people lose their minds

Ah, be careful you don’t lose yours, oh”

Personally my favourite Aretha Franklin song is Natural Woman. Who can go past a woman’s innate desire to find someone who can bring out what it is we have buried deep inside.

When my soul was in the lost and found

You came along to claim it

I didn’t know just what was wrong with me

Till your kiss helped me name it

Now I’m no longer doubtful, of what I’m living for

And if I make you happy, I don’t need to do more

‘Cause you make me feel,

You make me feel,

You make me feel like

A natural woman

Aretha was a real, warm, savvy, traditional and passionate business woman before the term was even mainstream. And she ruled the music world on her own terms. If somebody wanted to work with her – even, for example, a megastar like George Michael – Aretha would not come to them. They had to come to Detroit … Motown … her home and the centre of her universe. She refused to compromise.

Her songs reached the inner most soul of every woman who listened and soothed many a heart.

A woman’s woman, Aretha will forever be the Queen of Soul, and the legendary voice who influenced an entire generation. R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
