How to turn your creative passion into the career of your dreams

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style.” —Maya Angelou

Passion. It’s a word we hear and talk a lot about. It can conjure up a myriad of thoughts and emotions depending upon the topic. It’s something we all strive to emanate in the pursuit of living a fulfilled, purposeful, and authentic life. However, when it comes to our jobs, many of us still fall short of pursuing what makes us thrive day in and day out.

If you want to truly be able to experience the success and happiness that allows you to live a more gratified life, you need to let your passions fuel your motivation to pursue what you most enjoy and what you are naturally gifted to do. So, how do you turn your creative passion into a career? Let’s take a look at some helpful tips to get your creative juices flowing.

Meet the demand.

Before you take the leap to quit your day job and pursue your passion, take the time to determine how much demand and competition there is for the particular product or service you want to offer. Doing what you love is great, but you need to know you’ll be able to pay the bills, put food on the table, and eventually make a decent profit. Once you are confident in the need and in your ability to stand out from your competitors, you’re ready to take the next step.

Research, research, research.

This is where you have to really look into the business side of what you want to do by conducting a detailed search on what it would take to launch a career in this field. Are you wanting to start your own business from scratch or buy out an existing one? Or are you wanting to find the right company or organisation that would be a good fit and a place where you would be able to use your talents and skills to their fullest?

Whichever avenue you choose, take the time to create a business plan as well as look into the specific machinery or equipment you might need to purchase. Also, be sure to research whether you will need to earn a certificate or a degree or receive any special training. You should also interview people who own or work in a similar business to the one you’re considering as they can provide valuable insight and advice for your own journey.

In addition, make a detailed plan of the steps you need to take to make your passion a realistic career opportunity. Include what you need to do and how much you need to spend before you launch into your new venture. If possible, always have a back-up plan in case Plan A doesn’t work out.

Merge passion with know-how.

To be successful and establish credibility, you must first become a professional in your field of aspiration. If you want to be viewed as an expert, you will need to have more than just a handful of innate skills. So, take the time to acquire the necessary training to become marketable. For example, take a night, weekend, or online class while you’re still in your current job, or take a sabbatical to attend an intensive training or to do an internship. The extra effort you put forth will be well worth it in the end.

Then, ask yourself, “How will I stand out?” It’s no secret that in order to be successful in any given field, it’s important to find unique and creative ways to set yourself apart. Just like any exceptional product or service, you will need to establish a unique quality and identifier—something your business can be known for. Once people recognise your niche, it will be a lot easier for you to diversify into other areas.

Cultivate a motivated mindset.

To see your plans realised, let your passion be the driving force behind your motivation. Your road is not always going to be smooth, so it’s important to plan for bumps along the way and allow for flexibility to make adjustments accordingly. Be proactive and take a step every day that moves you closer to your goal.

Never stop innovating, creating, and looking for inspiration. Every aspect of building a career designed from your heart involves originality and vision. Whether it’s how you create the product or how you devise a keen marketing strategy, you’ll need to stay motivated to always keep evolving and growing in your craft.

Build a diverse network.

Whether it’s person-to-person or B2B, networking is simply smart business. Look for opportunities such as seminars, events, or conventions to meet people with varying connections who can help open the door to your success. Next, brainstorm a list of people you may already know in these fields and ask them if they would be willing to meet you for coffee and offer some professional advice.

The purpose of networking is all about meeting different people who know others in the industry you’re interested in breaking into. This is also a great time to utilise your social media channels. Politely and professionally message your contacts, start following people who are notably “making it” in the field, and then offer positive affirmation and interest in their work. Communication is key to networking successfully.

There really is no reason you shouldn’t be able to love what you do every day. With hard work, determination, and passion, you can create a successful career that brings you purpose and fulfilment.
