Do you want to be successful?
Do you have the drive and ambition to find success?
Do you know the secret to it?
If you answered no to the last question, don’t worry. When you’re starting your career and trying to get your foot in the door – and on the success ladder — it’s unlikely you’ll know the answer.
Fortunately, we can tell you the secrets of successful people. Unfortunately, there isn’t just one. But if you’re serious about success, the more you can try, the better you’ll do.
1. Don’t do it for the $
Making money is fine. Making money is, in fact, quite good. But if you have a dream or goal that you want to achieve, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons: passion for the work or industry, and not just for the financial incentives.
The day you choose the financial incentive over the dream or goal, is the day you should get out of that job or industry – because you will no longer be doing something you’re passionate about. And that means it just becomes ‘work’.
2. Don’t be afraid to be an outsider
Do you think that any driven person with a goal was ever afraid of being an outsider – or even an outcast? No. They weren’t.
What they were was someone who would stop at nothing to achieve their goal and make sure they climbed to the top of the ladder to make their business worked.
So, even if it sets you apart from everyone else in the industry, don’t be afraid. Because in the end, it just could turn out to be the best decision you’ve ever made.
3. Work harder than you ever thought possible
If you ask someone about how hard they work to achieve their goals, and what they say scares you, that fear will cripple your effots.
This is because it is only after you have done all the hard work and achieved your goals, that you realize how necessary it was in the first place.
So don’t be afraid of hard work, because if you are serious about achieving your goals, you’ll do just about anything to achieve them.
4. Be patient, success is a process
Realistically, overnight success generally doesn’t last because of how quickly it arrives.
True success is worked at and earned by years of slaving away at what you want to do.
So, even if it takes longer than you expected or would like, don’t worry because in the end, it will work out better for you because of how much harder you are willing to work in order to succeed — and make your business a successful one.
5. Keep your eye on the ball
Achieving your goals means never losing sight of what they are.
This involves having a certain level of focus and concentration on what your goals are, what you want to achieve in your career and trying not to get distracted by what’s happening around you.
So, while life can be unpredictable, just remember what you want to achieve in your career and keep working on that until you get there.
6. Learn how to say ‘No’
You have to draw the line somewhere. And sometimes that line ends at ‘no’.
You need to set boundaries with the people you work with and for, in regards to when they can ask you for help and what they ask you for help with.
So, even if it feels uncomfortable, just remember that you are allowed to say no from time to time, especially if saying ‘yes’ gets in the way of your goals.
7. Trust your instincts
When faced with a problem, the biggest obstacle you have to overcome is yourself.
Something people often struggle with is over-thinking and not trusting their instincts. Trusting that ‘gut feel’ is exactly what you should do more often, because you know yourself and what you want the best.
But, in times of doubt, the best thing you can do when making tough decisions is to do all the research you can on a topic to become as informed as you can on it. An informed instinct is always better than a stab in the dark.
At the end of the day, you need to make the changes that feel right to you, like shifting the direction of your goals, which you can only do if you trust yourself and your instincts.
8. Keep promises, no matter how small
One of the many things that builds trust is keeping promises, no matter how small they are.
Whether it’s paying back a $10 loan or following through on a deal with another person or business, do it. This way, you’ll not only earn the other person’s trust, you’ll also show what kind of person you are, personally and professionally.
Becoming known as being a promise keeper can help build your profile and brand.
9. Lead, don’t dictate
Actions speak louder than words. No matter what career you are in.
This is because the qualities you build your career and business on, will be the qualities that attract people to you and support your goals.
So, no matter what your goal is or however many people are helping you achieve it, if you lead them with conviction, honesty and dedication, they will follow you anywhere.
10. Don’t be afraid—or embarrassed—of your failures
Your failures tell you where you have been and how hard you have worked to achieve your goals.
So, no matter what you’ve been through, don’t be embarrassed if you failed 100 times to develop and grow your business. If anything, you just found 100 ways it doesn’t work. As Ferdinand Porsche (yes, THAT Porsche) said: he who does not fail has not tried hard enough.
11. Ask questions, a lot of them
Asking a lot of questions says that you are a curious and inquisitive person, who is open to new ideas and possibilities, and even self-reflection.
By asking a lot of questions, you display a skill set that shows that you research all your available resources to find the answer you are looking for.
Asking questions also shows that you are willing to admit you don’t know something and are willing to ask for help.
So, no matter what it is, don’t be afraid to ask someone how something works, what their opinion is on something or even to ask yourself if you’re going in the right direction.
