In a recent interview at the prestigious Commonwealth Club of California, Kim Kardashian briefly addressed the objectification of women, asserting that women are “absolutely” objectified by the media.
This confused me a little.
How is it that the media, the tool that made her the celebrity she is today, is suddenly her enemy — and therefore the enemy of women across the globe?
I could understand her position if she (and her entire family) didn’t constantly manipulate, feed and even work to grow the media’s appetite for half naked women and salacious gossip…
But did her recent #breaktheinternet naked public relations stunt not strip women of all respect and decency in the eyes of the media, within seconds?
Is it the media objectifying women or are certain women objectifying themselves (and by association, all of us) because — hey let’s face it — it’s easier to gain Twitter followers with bare breasts than it is with serious topics of discussion.
Maybe if more influential and powerful women like Ms Kardashian kept their clothes on and presented the media only with positive messaging and images… the media wouldn’t have anything to objectify. But then KK wouldn’t have any celebrity to enjoy — and complain about.
