4 reasons you must be on LinkedIn

As a business coach, I’ve worked with professionals who initially didn’t think they needed to be on LinkedIn.   Fairly early in our relationship I’ve convinced them this is not the case and from my own experience have picked up so many great opportunities (business and non-business) which have helped me achieve some exceptional successes – purely because I was on LinkedIn.

1. But I’ve already got a job!

Yes, and whilst you may not be looking for employment now, you should be present on LinkedIn to start developing relationships and start collecting endorsements and testimonials.   Get this started now whilst you are not in need of a job.  The future is always changing – you don’t know what tomorrow will bring and only 10% of job are advertised; more than ever it’s more ‘who you know, not what you know’.

2. I don’t get sales via LinkedIn

If you have no profile (or a poor one) absolutely I understand you are not getting work and business via LinkedIn.   It’s a professional network, so if you come across (or don’t appear) as a professional, you will be passed over.  If you are a professional or are in a service industry, then having LinkedIn is essentially another income stream.

3. Due diligence

Anyone smart in business will check you out before either (a) employing you or (b) using your services.   Expect to be Googled, which is why having both a website and great LinkedIn profile will help you receive more opportunities.

4. Education

LinkedIn is a fantastic place to get snippets of often very high quality education.   Many of its members are frequently experts in their fields – you’re learning from the best of the best.   If you just have a spare two minutes whilst waiting for an appointment or riding the elevator, what a great way to spend that couple of minutes.

Even if you are not a professional, but providing a service to a professional, then be aware they will want to check you out, and LinkedIn is a common way of doing this.   Be on LinkedIn so you can get found, especially if you do not have a website (and even if you do).  I have also found the free version works just fine.     Setup will take a couple of hours, but ongoing, it’s really only 5 minutes a day in maintenance.    LinkedIn is a cost effective marketing tool we can all access.
