How to be a confident woman at work

Being a woman in the workplace is a very complicated matter nowadays. Actually, being a woman in general is difficult nowadays, but this is a completely different problem. Even though we live in the 21st century, we are still burdened with ridiculous expectations from society, as if we’re still living in Medieval times. We are expected to know our place on many topics, and all most of us want to say back is profanity. The biggest issue women face at work, is the lack of confidence. Even though our parents spend thousands on our education, most of us still think that we’re not good enough or that there is someone better. Well, it’s time to throw all that away, “man up” and get to work. Here are a few tips to help you be more confident.

Dress for success

I know…it sounds superficial. But it’s a fact that people judge everything by its appearance. And one mishap can ruin your reputation in that company for life. So, to avoid any mishaps, make sure that you always dress professionally, and what’s more important, wear clothes that fit you. I know that all of us would love to wear clothes a few sizes smaller, but if your skirt tears in the middle of a meeting, it won’t help your confidence.

Integrate yourself within the team

Don’t be that weird new girl that doesn’t speak to anyone. Get to know your coworkers, your clients, your boss and anyone else you might have to work with. Don’t be too pushy, of course, but show them that you’re social and interested. Once you show them that you’re not a tough person to talk to, they will start reaching out themselves. It’s important to create business relationships, and getting to know the people you work with will help ease the entire process. It’s also a known fact, that the more you know about your working environment, the more confident you get.

Stop comparing yourself to others

Stop looking at what other people wear, say and do, and focus on yourself. Every single person is unique and has a different approach to things, comparing yourself to others will only make you unhappy. Instead, focus on yourself, find out what you’re good at, grow your skills, acquire new ones and don’t be afraid to try new things. You were chosen for the given position for a reason, the fact that you’re there means that someone thought you were worthy enough. Don’t forget that even for a second.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

The first thing I learned when I was starting my carrier, is that there are no stupid questions. Sometimes asking a “stupid” question can save you from making a giant mistake that would cost you and the company a lot. Asking questions is how we learn, and we shouldn’t be afraid of doing that. Of course, there are some imbeciles that might laugh at your questions, but the joke is on them, not on you. The more you ask, the more you learn, the better you get at your work, the bigger the chance for promotion is. And this is the goal, after all.

Stop thinking your ideas are stupid

Another issue, that usually makes us fail at the workplace, is that we always think that our ideas are stupid. Studies show, that many women prefer not to speak out their ideas on meetings, because they don’t feel confident enough. If you want to succeed at work, you need to throw that habit away and start sharing your ideas. You may think that they are stupid, but someone else might not.

Be bossy

Many women, especially ones on leadership positions, are afraid of giving their opinions or giving orders, because they don’t want to appear “bossy”. Well, you’re not bossy sweetie, you are the boss. Most of us spend too much time trying to be nice and understanding to people, and this is usually what makes us look unfit for a promotion. Well, this is your workplace, you don’t have to be best friends with everyone, what you need to do is to provide positive results for your company. The sooner you realise that, the better. There are leaders and followers for a reason.  Someone has to make the tough decisions. If you want that to be you, start practicing.

Don’t wait to be rescued

Many women nowadays still live with the fairy tale belief, that there is always someone there to save them. Well, if you want to succeed at work and be more confident, throw that belief out the window. Stop dreaming and start living. The workplace is not a place for games, it’s a competition where you either win or lose. If you have a problem, look for a solution. Don’t sit around and wait for someone to find it for you. When you work hard, you feel proud. And when you feel proud, you are confident.
