Emotional Intelligence (EQ), is one of 9 intelligences. In business, it is considered one of the most important intelligences and is highly valued in business today. In fact, it pretty much determines your career success.
Essentially it is two things. First bit is, ‘know yourself’ and the other part of is ‘know your impact on others’. There is no way you can do the second one without the first bit. That’s EQ in a nutshell.
Underneath that is 5 key essential parts to EQ. First one is self-awareness. How self-aware are you? You’ll know because you will have worked on yourself. You’re either into it or you’re not. If you’re sitting there asking what self-awareness is, then you are probably not very self-aware.
Next is Self-regulation. How well do you self-regulate’? Anyone who’s a bit overweight or drinks too much or doesn’t do the right things that they know are important, like eat well, sleep well, drink water, exercise and keep things in moderation has a self-regulation issue.
So that brings us to the next one – motivation. How motivated you are? How much get up and go have you got? Do you have lots of natural motivation to get things done? Successful people have got quite a lot of drive inside of themselves.
Next is empathy. Empathy is being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Some people are highly empathic. Now that’s not great if you don’t know how to manage that. If you are empathic you can feel what other people are feeling and can imagine how that person feels and relate to them on that level.
Some people have no idea; they are not interested in people and can’t feel or imagine how other people are feeling. But most people have some level of empathy otherwise they would be considered sociopaths or worst, psychopaths at the most extreme end of this spectrum.
Anyway last one is social skills. Give yourself a rating for how good you are socially. Being able to talk to strangers and make friends and relate to people. It’s a very important skill. Notice how successful people are very good socially. If you don’t have good social skills you can’t bond with others, or network easily. You can’t interview well, or pitch your ideas properly and people find it awkward to be around you.
EQ is what will make you more successful in business and in your personal life. EQ is the golden child in business today.
