People have a range of reasons for starting their own business and becoming their own boss…ranging from the interesting challenges to the attraction of a lifestyle boost. What is your purpose for becoming self-employed? Are you drawn by the challenges of starting and managing your own business? Or will self-employment enable you to achieve a certain lifestyle?
Some individuals look upon self-employment in terms of the pure challenge of organising and operating their own business. They define success in terms of over-coming obstacles, solving problems, continuous improvement and so on.
The type of business they choose and the way they operate it provides an ongoing opportunity for challenges.
Refresh Your Business: effective planning
Other individuals look upon self-employment as a way to integrate and balance their family, career and personal development. This is not independence; it is the need for a balanced way of life in which career decisions do not have to dominate. Placing a premium on things like where to live, the amount of time spent working and the whole family versus business relationships.
Those that do it for the challenge are often more successful, as they enjoy the day to day battles that goes with running a business.
However those that start a business for work life balance are often in for a rude shock and become very concerned when they work harder than ever to make sure their bills are paid, particularly in the early days.
Refresh Your Business: How determined are you?
I recommend you think very carefully about what the purpose of your business is going to be. Become realistic about the amount of energy and focus it takes to build a strong successful business. I have noticed a shift away from the “silver bullet” mentality and more towards realising that there is no “silver bullet” in business. There is no such thing as 3 easy to steps , but these programs always lead on to a complex larger program that requires work to implement.
I like to work with clients who enjoy a challenge and are realistic about “what they don’t know” and are willing to do the work to set up the processes and systems to get their business working well.
