4 Tips on how to make a roadmap to success before university

on

Not many people accidentally stumble upon a successful and rewarding career without planning for it.

Before university even begins there are things that can be done to prepare ahead of time. This way you are more likely to end up with a fulfilling career that makes you happy and may even pay very well.

In this article, I will outline the steps you should be taking before you get to university so you land that dream job when you’re done.

Build a career mindset

You don’t necessarily need to decide on a specific career before you get to university, but you do need to get your mind around putting yourself on the right path to ensure you do get the job you want.

This mindset should have three phases:

  • Foundation – Start with an idea of what type of work you would like to do. Some people envision traveling a lot, or maybe something creative as a jumping-off point.
  • Grow the idea – After you’ve considered what type of work you would like then explore the various types of jobs that allow you to work in the way you would like.
  • Research – Reach out to people in the fields that you are interested in and ask them a lot of questions. They can tell you how to plan your university career to ensure success after.

Get your finances in order

This may not seem relevant, but if you overspend while in university, you may end up taking on a job you are not very enthusiastic about. When you have financial pressure after graduating, you’re more likely to take the first offer.

Apply for a bursary to try to mitigate how much you end up spending on your education. Many students are not familiar with the bursary definition, so brush up on what it means and the steps necessary to get one.

Take relevant classes

Studying for a business degree, for instance, will require certain proficiencies than others.  If you are setting out on the business path it doesn’t make a lot of sense to take creative writing classes.

Get advice from an advisor as to which courses will be the most suitable for your degree and career prospects before you get started with your university education.

Stat working or volunteering

Any work experience you can put on a CV the better. When a prospect sees that you took some initiative before you even started university, then that will look very good.

It helps if the experience is relative to the job you want, but any work will be suitable. Volunteering is a great way to get some relevant experience in the field you wish to study.

Summary

Most people are not happy in their careers. This could be you, too if you don’t take charge before you get to uni. Instead of going with the flow and figuring it out as you go, you should put the pieces in place to land your dream job.
