5 easy ways to sharpen focus in the office

on

If we are lucky enough to land our dream job, then we surely love what we do for a living. For many of us though, we schlep to work every day counting the minutes until we get to go home again. Work is a necessity if we want to have things like homes, clothes, and food. Not to mention, all the wonderful extras it can buy like vacations, jewelry, and that new handbag.

Sometimes though, when we are at work, we lose our concentration and just can’t seem to focus on the task at hand. If you work in a deadline driven environment like I do, then you know how detrimental that lack of focus can be to your schedule. We put together this list of ways you can stay focused in your office so that success can be yours.

1. Section off your time

When I say this, I mean that you should work at intervals. You can schedule them any way you please, but the idea is to set time aside for each task and have it written down. That way, when the time comes to stay this task, all you need to do is work for the time allotted by your schedule.

For example, say you have an article due at 3pm. You want to have that done well before the deadline, so you want to schedule off enough time. If you know this piece might only take an hour to complete, you could section off 10am until 11am to write it.

That way, you have time before the deadline in case problems arise. It should be easier to focus on this piece because you only have until 11am to work on it before you should be moving on to the next project.

2. Diffuse some scents

There are a ton of essential oils that can help with focus. My personal favorite is Frankincense, but if musky scents aren’t your thing, there are still quite a few you can choose from. Lavender, vetiver, rosemary, peppermint, cypress, patchouli, and cedarwood are just a few of the many scents that can perk up your attention span and help you focus when needed.

If you are unfamiliar with essential oils and aromatherapy, you should check out these Young Living oils review to get an idea of what is out there. You might find that just inhaling a good smell is all the push you needed to focus. Diffusers aren’t difficult to use, and there are several on the market that would go with any decor.

3. Give yourself breaks

While this is an article about staying focused, you can’t argue that doing such a thing is difficult when all you do is stare at your computer all day long. What’s the old saying? All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.

I don’t know about Jack, but I think that if you are doing nothing but focusing on your work, then slip-ups are bound to happen. Take fifteen minutes between projects to step away from your desk or out of the office. Go take a walk if you can to freshen your brain. You’ll be surprised at what a difference something so simple can make.

4. Have a plan

If you have your day’s activities just scattered all over your desk with no real plan in place on how to get it all done, then I am not surprised that you lose focus from time to time. Isn’t it easier to get somewhere when you have directions?

Completing projects is just like a road trip. You have a point A and a point B and how fast you get there all depends on how many pit stops you make. In all seriousness though, if you are just “winging it” as they say, then you are never going to reach the end because I doubt you have any idea of what has already been done.

Plan it out and write it down. If you find that you are losing focus, then look at the plan you devised. It should inspire you to dive right back in.

5. Get a good night’s sleep

How you work in our office during the day has a great deal to do with how you spent the night before. There are more than seventy types of sleep disorders which can lead a person to no sleep or very little depending on how the disorder affects them.

No matter what the disorder is- if you aren’t getting the full eight hours of sleep your body requires, then how in the world could you expect to be able to focus on your tasks when you are in the office? Some ways to ensure that you get a good night of sleep is by shutting off your devices at least thirty minutes before you go to bed and exercise regularly.

Conclusion

Focusing is important if we want to get the job done right. Sometimes, keeping our attention on one thing is just far too difficult and we need a little boost. When we focus well, we work well, and our confidence is boosted. These five tips should help you obtain the focus you are looking for when you need it the most.
