Want to stand out at your next public event? Here’s what to do

Public events such as trade shows are fantastic places to attend if you want to grow your business. Not only are they excellent places to improve your list of business contacts, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity to take on feedback from your audience and learn new industry trends as they develop. It’s also a good place to scout for your competition to see what you’re up against, and you can even use it as a way to gauge customer interest on your future ideas.

With so many opportunities in a trade show or public event, it’s important that you take advantage of them by visiting them as much as possible. But in order to make this easier, you’ll need to find ways to stand out and garner more attention. It’s easier said than done, but we’re going to suggest a couple of ideas to help you get more recognition at your next event.

Get on social media before the event

As a business, you should already have a social media account and you should already be using it to build a following. You should also have a blog or at least some way to contact your audience, especially those who are interested enough to register for your email listing and other news. Use these channels of communication to publicize that you will be attending a certain event. Tweet it out, post on Facebook and make sure you let your Instagram followers know. This will help spread the word and you’ll make a bigger impact when you do attend.

Focus on your visuals

Large professionally-designed signs, pull up banners and video demonstrations are all going to help you garner more attention. When the event floor is busy and there’s a lot of foot traffic, you’re essentially fighting over the attention of every attendee. In the past, people used “booth babes” to draw attention, but they don’t work anymore even though they are still around. It’s all about showing off your product and making a good first impression.

Give away something special

It’s common to order a batch of corporate pens, USB drives or even shirts to give away at your event. Some companies are even brave enough to consider a flyer or a business card a gift that they hand out. Sadly, these are all very boring and there are much better alternatives to consider. For instance, why not give away headphones if you’re focused on audio? You could even give out phone and laptop skins, or something a little more light-hearted such as balloons. There are plenty of quirky gifts to hand out–you just need to be more imaginative.

As you can see, standing out at a public event is all about exposure before the event and physically standing out by having an attractive booth. The more attention you create by doing things differently, the more you’ll stand out and the more people will pay attention to you.
