There’s no denying that being a woman high up in the workplace is hard. As unfair as it is, high-level business is a male domain. Feminism may have done fantastic things, but discrimination is more prevalent than we realize. Women are still classed in the ‘receptionist’ role, while men swan about in suits with cigars hanging from their mouths. Okay, not quite. But any woman who wants to go far knows the struggles. The good news is, us ladies have plenty of tricks up our sleeves. Instead of fighting against stereotypes, playing to your woman-hood may give you the edge. And we don’t mean flirting your way to the top, either.
Attention to detail
In general, women have the upper hand when it comes to attention to detail. Men look at the big picture, and so miss the small things. But, in business, it’s often the little things that make a difference. You stand a better chance of spotting small trends, money-saving methods, and problems. You’ll locate areas you can save money on, like electrical bills. As such, you can look into alternatives. You could research the benefits of commercial solar, or other alternatives that will make a difference. You’ll also be able to spot trends in advertising and apply them to your strategy. Your attention will help to make your product better, too. After all, you can never scrutinize that finished product too much. The more attention you pay, the more improvements you can make.
Communication
You don’t need to be a genius to work out that women’s communication is their main point of power. Any business person needs to be able to communicate. It’s the best way to get your point across and earn those sales. The good news for us is that women operate in a very language based way. In fact, Huffington Post revealed that women speak up to 8,000 words a day! In comparison, men only speak 4,000. That’s a huge difference, and worth taking into consideration next time you’re undermined. So, why are women better at communication? If you want to get scientific, the brain areas which deal with language are larger in females. Women are also more likely to seek solutions by talking through problems. The fact that men don’t do this may well be the reason many relationships fail. But, in a business sense, it’s the upper-hand you need!
Get emotional
We women are the emotional ones. In fact, the female brain has a larger deep limbic system than men. So, there’s a reason we get teary much easier! But, instead of seeing this as a weakness in your business pursuits, use it to your advantage. People like individuals they can warm to. Businessmen are often cold and, well…businesslike. You may find that changing tack and investing in your emotional side will earn you sales. People will relate a lot more to someone they have an emotional connection with. Don’t be afraid to open up to clients and see how they react.
