5 Questions that will help you choose the right career

We are all supposed to know what we want to do with our lives from a very young age. However, it is rarely this straightforward. After all, how are you supposed to know what job you want to do for the rest of your days when you have no experience in any of them? Well, if you ask yourself the following questions, it should help you get to where you want to be…

What do you love?

There is only one place to begin, and this is by making a list of all of the things you love. After all, it may be clichéd, but you are going to spend most of your life working and, therefore, it is imperative that you love what you do. If you make a list of all of the things that you love and enjoy, you will then be able to tap into your passions, which will be a great starting point.

What type of working environment suits your personality?

You not only need to think about your skills, but also your personality and the type of working environment that is going to be suitable for you. For example, you may thrive in a loud and busy role if you are an extrovert, yet you may prefer a quieter research role if you are an introvert.

What is your goal?

You need to figure out what your goal is in life. Are you someone who wants to settle down and have a family and focus on children? Or, are you someone that wants to have a high-flying career and make it to the top? Perhaps you are motivated by money, in which case it is worth finding out which graduates careers pay the best? Determining your main goal from life is important so you can put your foot on the right career ladder! Be honest with yourself, though; your goal is what you want, not what is expected of you.

Are your prevention-focused or promotion-focused?

The former is someone that is focused on protecting everything they have done so far. You are someone who prefers analytical thinking, thoroughness, reliability, and planning. On the other hand, if you are a promotion-focused professional, you are an entrepreneur and classic creative. You are all about seizing new opportunities and working quickly. You need to be mindful, though, as you are also prone to being impulsive and making bigger mistakes. Knowing whether you are promotion or prevention-focused should help you to get a better understanding of the right type of career for you.

So there you have it: some of the key questions you need to ask yourself when determining what career you want to have. Needless to say, this is a big and difficult decision to come to. However, by considering everything carefully and using the advice above to help you, you should be able to get a better understanding regarding the right career path for you.
